Hi I'll post more later but my results for Both A211 Philosophy and the Human Condition and MST221 are both in. I managed to get 85% for both exams so just scraped a distinction for both courses. I was really surprised for A211 as my essays only averaged 78% well within grade 2 territory. They must have applied some discretion. Anyway needless to say I'm chuffed to bits. I apologise for not posting much before a combination of a severe cold and the bad weather. I'm currently looking at solving differential equations by series solution of which more later

Nice work Chris. I'm glad to see you got such good results in both courses. I'm no expert on philosophy, but I rather think, being much less of an exact science than mathematics, there is probably a bit more give in the scoring system. Whatever the reason, it must be a nice surprise.
ReplyDeleteI was very pleased with my M208 mark too for the record. I'd love to see an actual breakdown of the score, to learn where I lost those marks, rather than just showing me which bracket each section was in, but we can't have everything.
Very much looking forward to next year, when in the case of M337, we'll be on the same course.

well done yourself for M208 that is a real achievement. I agree A more detailed breakdown of the results would be beneficial. Look forward to collabarating with you on M337. What other courses if any? are you doing.

ReplyDeleteI think I saw commented by you some time ago that you didn't quite 'get' the fascination with number theory. Well, I'll admit, I felt much the same as far as MS221 went. Hoping this will finally convince me that it is as interesting as everyone says.

I think the logic will be more fascinating than the number theory. Especially Godel's theorem about the limitations of formal systems strong enough to include arithmetic. I've always wanted to properly understand it. Part of me regrets I wont be able to fit it in for the BSc maybe if its still running when I do the MSc I might try it then. I do have books on the subject. And yes I still don't get the fascination with the billionth and twenty third decimal place of pi. Or what the 23567123478th prime number is. I caught the repeat of the Horizon program on Wile's proof of Fermat's last theorem last week. Whilst it was as far as one could go without getting into details I still was left pondering what he had actually done. At that level number theory does seem to have some links with algebra, group theory and topology and is probably more fascinating than I give it credit for. On the other hand I really did not enjoy deciphering RSA codes. Anyway please let me know how you get on. I take it the year after it's group theory and topology in which case we will be overlapping again
